All Americans also know Lech Walesa, for them he was the guy who initiated fall of communism. They didn't know Kwasniewski, and they don't know Kaczynski as well, they just don't care about Poland, sadly. And we still fight for them in Iraq; IMHO we should say "OK, either you pay for this in cash and some good contracts, get Poles visas to US, or our army goes home!" Honestly, Americans are ashamed that Poland is on their side, that’s the heritage of all stupid “polish jokes” made by Jews here…

And yeah I agree with uncle:Z () Same with the British. I think Poland is seen as useful but they just don't have to give a damn about it. Sad thing is, Poland obviously agrees to be treated that way...

Yeap: and now some facts about Poland. Heard by myself in the UK

We are somewhere in the northern part of the Asia
In our forests we can meet some polar bears
Poland as the name of a country makes out with North Pole that is the reason why lots of people f. the UK thinks that in our country we ve got permanent winter with -30 C etc.
The best thing that i heard was that poland is between germany and russia
British Geography knowledge is worst then 0

And the sad part is, that older Polish generation living in the US still asks the same question: "Panie, a w Polsce cały czas taka sama bida jak była, prawda?" and they don't get that times changed... Younger generation just doesn't care about their Polish roots and repeats all their fathers opinions...

But we also can't generalise, there are a lot of people who are like what both of you described, but I also live in the UK and people I know have actually heard of Poland and know some facts about it. True, when you ask an uneducated person who didn't pay attention at school then that's the answers you get. And it is true that the knowledge of geography in UK is quite low (I know because I did attend a school here). But this is not the case with everyone. Also I know a lot of younger generation people and they are trying to maintain their Polish roots, espacially in the Polish YMCA, or other Polish organisations. On the other hand there are many who just do not give a damn. I don't really believe in nationalism but people should remember who they are and where they come from.
