Athenian Cavalry
During the period of the Persian Wars, the Athenian cavalry numbered only about 300 drawn from the aristocracy. As Athens began to dominate Greek politics more and more in the middle of the 5th Century BCE, this number was increased to 1,000, although still limited to the few citizens who could afford the upkeep of the horses. Although stipend (katastasis) was granted for their care even in peacetime, it had to be paid back at the time of retirement unless the horse had been killed in battle, in which case it was considered payment for the lost mount.
