The descendant of the infamous MG42, the MG3 is chambered in 7.62x51mm. Its simple and reliable design has made it quite popular among many nations in spite the competition of other equally impressive general purpose machine guns like the FN-MAG and PKM.
One of the possible reasons the U.S didnt adopt the MG3, instead going for the M60 first, was the stigma the weapon carried due to its exact resemblance to the Nazi machine gun.
